The 12 medical and social welfare agencies affiliated with the Jewish Welfare Federation of Metropolitan Chicago will need $26, 000, 000 in 1961 and the Federation will have to provide $5, 750, 000 toward that total operating budget, Charles Aaron, Federation president, reported last night at the agency’s 61st annual meeting.
Mr. Aaron, disclosing that the Federation had to provide $5, 250, 000 to bridge the gap between the expenditures and income of the affiliated agencies in 1960,said that for the second time in its history, the Federation had a deficit of $88, 000 in 1960 which would have to be made up in 1961. He reported that the 12 agencies spent more than $24, 000, 000 in providing medical and social welfare services to more than 190,000 persons last year.
More than 700 persons, including Mayor Richard J. Daley, attended the dinner meeting. They also heard the first major address in Chicago by Governor Otto Kerner since he took office. In disclosing his program for Illinois state welfare activities, Gov. Kerner continued a tradition dating back to the 1930’s that has seen every governor since then presenting his social welfare program at an annual meeting of the Federation.
