A history of the Jewish community of Chicago, furnishing a portrait of this large community of 400, 000 Jewish people, and reflecting the achievements of their 123 synagogues, dozens of large institutions and hundreds of smaller groups, is being compiled by a special Golden.Jibilee Committee formed here in honor of the 50th anniversary of The Sentinel, it was announced here today. The Sentinel, Chicago’s weekly Jewish newspaper, was founded in 1911.
The idea of a history of Chicago Jewry was suggested by J.I. Fishbein, publisher and editor of The Sentinel, after a group of Chicago leaders had proposed the organization of a banquet to honor The Sentinel’s 50th anniversary. “We proposed instead, ” said Mr. Fish bein, “that they utilize the occasion to fulfill a long-time dream that would benefit the entire community and which, at the same time, would perpetuate our traditional role as the chronicler of Jewish history. We told our good friends that they would best celebrate the golden jubilee of The Sentinel by helping us publish a readable, popular history of Chicago Jewry, covering the past five decades of our existence.”
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
