Magistrate Bertram Reece today again refused an application to set bail for Shalom Sottarks, the 22-year-old Israeli teacher, who is being held in jail here on the application of the Israel Government for his extradition. The religious school teacher is accused by Israel of hiding, “somewhere in England,” 11-year-old Yossele Schumacher. That boy had been abducted from his parents in Israel, who feared he would not receive an Orthodox Hebrew education.

The court remanded Schtarks for another hearing, scheduled for Thursday. His counsel insists that he does not know where the child is. Leonard Caplin, an attorney for the Israel Government in the extradition request, told the court that the Schtarks defense is “drawing a procession of red herrings” across the missing boy’s trail.
