The Jewish Community Foundation, an agency of the Los Angeles Jewish Federation-Council, has been bequeathed more than $1,000,000 the entire estate of the late Sara Federman Hersh Kuttnauer. Irving Hill, president of the federation, said this was the largest single gift in the history of Los Angeles Jewish philanthropy.
Mrs. Kuttrauer, a native of Anaheim, California, was a member of a pioneer Jewish family. Her father, Samuel Federman, was one of the founders of the Cedars of Lebanon Hospital and of the Hebrew Free Loan society. Her husband, Samuel Hersh, was a prominent realtor in the early days of Los Angeles and a founder of the original Temple Emanuel.
Maurice Turner, president of the foundation, said the gift was unique not only for its size but also for the fact that Mrs. Kutthauer, in her will, gave the foundation broad authority and discretion in dispensing the gift, rather than confining the terms of the bequest to narrow limits which might eventually become obsolete. The foundation handles gifts for designated beneficiaries without regard to race, color or creed.
