The formal establishment of the Canada-Israel Chamber of Commerce and Industry was marked here by a dinner attended by Israel Ambassador Yaacov Herzog, Dr. Y. Foerder, president of Israel’s Bank Leumi and leading Canadian businessmen.

Expressing concern with those nations which look upon the Middle East as an area of permanent tension, Ambassador Herzog told the guests there was “a beginning of a sense of destiny” in the region. He said that despite the present conflict between Egypt and Syria, the countries of the Middle East will begin to prosper through “stability and creativeness.”

Greetings to the new organization were received from Prime Minister John Diefenbaker and from Trade and Commerce Minister Hees, who called the establishment of the organization” an event of great importance tending to advance relations with a very friendly nation.” A 12-man Israeli trade mission is expected to arrive in Canada next month. Their visit here will be followed by a Canadian mission to Israel early in 1962.
