Demands that Jews in Quebec be given equal rights in education with Protestants and other non-Catholics were made this weekend by the Protestant Teachers Association of the Province of Quebec. The demands were filed with the Royal Commission on Education, which has been conducting a series of hearings on the issue.
A brief filed with the Royal Commission, on behalf of the 5, 000 members of the Protestant teachers group, proposed reforms to relieve what they called the “disabilities” suffered by the Jews here; They pointed out that there are no Jewish members on the Protestant School Board of Montreal, in spite of the fact that nearly a third of the 63, 000 students in the Protestant schools are of the Jewish faith; More than half of the total in-come of the Protestant education commission is derived from Jewish sources.
A meeting of the Canadian Jewish Congress committee on the position of the Jews in the educational system in this province will be held here Wednesday; The committee had invited suggestions from members of the Jewish community and from Jewish organizations as to what might properly be included in any brief that might be filed with the Royal Commission on behalf of the Jewish people here.
