The Cabinet decided today to submit Israel’s nine-day-old strike of postal workers to arbitration. The strike, which began with demands by letter carriers for a salary increase of 50 pounds ($16.67) per month, spread to other postal workers, affecting employes of the country’s telephone and telegraph services, philatelic and postal savings divisions.
Minister of Posts Eliahu Sasson told the Cabinet today that if the demands of the postal workers are met, it would increase the Ministry’s bud get by some 100,000,000 pounds ($33, 300, 000) annually. A Ministerial committee named to deal with the strike, called on the workers to return to their duties and announced that the Government would abide by the decision of the arbitrator. Meanwhile, workers in the cable offices sending cables abroad returned to work today.
