A Cairo broadcast in Hebrew, beamed to Israel and monitored here today, quoted a Soviet diplomat as predicting that “the campaign for emigration of Jews from the Soviet Union would not succeed.”
The broadcast said that the remarks were made by the First Secretary of the Russian Embassy in Cairo, during conversations with the Arab League Assistant Secretary, Dr. Sayyid Newfal. The broadcast quoted the Soviet official as asserting that Russian Jews “do not want to migrate to Israel.”
“It goes without saying that the Soviet diplomat did not make this declaration without first consulting his superiors,” said the broadcast, adding that “one can be certain that this declaration reflects the official policy of the Soviet Government.” The broadcast said also that Israel “cannot derive any advantage” from Soviet Jewish immigrants, although the reasons cited for this were indistinct in the monitored broadcast.
