Twelve rabbis were ordained yesterday and three other graduates were invested as cantors at ordination services of the New York school of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion held at Temple Emanu-El here.
Honorary degrees of doctor of Hebrew letters were awarded to Max J. Rubin, president of the New York City board of education; Stanley M. Isaacs, minority leader in the New York City Council and Dr. Shimon Bernstein, noted scholar in the fields of Hebrew poetry and Jewish literature. Rabbi Herbert Rose, spiritual leader of Temple Emanu-El, Livingston, N. J., received a doctor of Hebrew letters degree. The graduates were addressed by Rabbi Jacob Rudin, spiritual leader of Temple Beth El, Great Neck, L.I.
Honorary doctor of divinity degrees were awarded to Rabbi Edward Ellenbogen, chaplain in the U.S. Air Force; Rabbi Alexander Feinsilver, spiritual leader of Temple Covenant of Peace, Easton, Pa.; Rabbi Charles S. Freedman, Temple Beth Avodah, Westbury, L. I.; Rabbi Abram M. Granison, Temple Israel, Tallahassee, Fla.; and Dr. John J. Tepfer, dean of faculty of the seminary’s New York school.
Dr. Nelson Glueck, president of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, conferred the rabbinical degrees which were confirmed by Rabbi Maurice N. Eisendrath, president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations.
