Ten Senators, including members of both the Foreign Relations and Appropriations Committees, today revealed a joint letter to Secretary of State Dean Rusk, citing continued Arab discrimination against American Jews and demanding implementation of anti-bias declarations.
The move by the ten Senators was bi-partisan. It came at a time when the Foreign Aid Bill is nearing final consideration. Noting that they were members of either the Foreign Relations or Appropriations committees, the Senators wrote Mr. Rusk to “emphasize our conviction” that the State Department must give effect to the numerous declarations by Congress on this subject.
They cited a series of amendments and resolutions dating from 1956, which called in vain for the State Department to ask the President to use his discretion in withholding aid from Arab nations that discriminate against Americans. Signatories included Senators Hubert Humphrey, Minnesota Democrat; Alan Bible, Nevada Democrat; Clifford P. Case, New Jersey Republican; Dennis Chavez, New Mexico Democrat; Thomas J. Dodd, Connecticut Democrat; Thomas H, Kuchel, California Republican; Warren G. Magnuson, Washington Democrat; Gale W. McGee, Wyoming Democrat; Leverett Saltonstall, Massachusetts Republican; and Margaret Chase, Smith, Maine Republican.
