Israel to Celebrate 80th Anniversary of First Modern Pioneers

This year will be declared “First Settlers Year” in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the first settlers of the Bilu movement, the first modern Zionist pioneering movement established in Russia in 1882, according to a decision yesterday of the Cabinet.

A special ministerial committee will work out detailed proposals for the celebrations which will include special programs for schools and the issuance of special stamps. Petach Tikvah, which also celebrates the 80th anniversary of its founding, will be the site of Israel’s Independence Day parade next May. Other settlements celebrating their 80th anniversary this year include Zichron Yaakov and Rishon Lezion.
