A fresh protest was lodged with the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior today, alleging that the notorious Dachau concentration camp, near this city, is being neglected instead of being marked properly as a memorial to thousands of martyrs killed there during the Nazi regime. The protest was filed by the Council for Freedom and Right, a constituent member of the Central Association of Democratic Resistance Fighters and Organizations of Persecutees.
According to the complaint, Dachau should be marked properly because it was the first and one of the worst of Nazi concentration camps. While there is a memorial at the Dachau crematorium, the rest of the area is neglected, according to the protest, some of the former Nazi death huts being used for living quarters, while several saloons are located on the camp site. The complaining organization alleged the Ministry has not carried out previous promises to care for the area properly, with respect for the memories of those who died there.
The House of Lords dismissed today the appeal of Shalom Shtarkes, uncle of Yoselle Schumacher, against enforcement of the warrant for his extradition to Israel on charges of complicity in his nephew’s kidnaping and hiding.
Shtarkes, who had been free on bail pending the outcome of the appeal, was rearrested and taken back to Brixton Prison where he will remain until the final step in the extradition proceedings–determination by the British Home Office on whether to enforce the extradition order.
The Israel Government maintained the extradition demand despite the fact that Yoselle was found last July by the Israeli secret service in the home of a Brooklyn rabbi and reunited with his mother, ending a disappearance of more than two years.
