U.S. Rejects Egypt’s Complaint Against Selling Missiles Tc Israel

A suggestion that Middle East countries agree to regional disarmament or an arms limitation plan to keep heavy weapons out of the area was made here by Secretary of State Dean Rusk yesterday to the Egyptian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Fawzi, it was learned here today.

The suggestion was advanced in reply to the complaint made by the Egyptian Minister to Secretary Rusk against the decision of the United States to sell defensive missiles to Israel, Mr. Rusk told the Egyptian diplomat that the United States considers the short-range Hawk missiles which will go to Israel as strictly defensive weapons. He also emphasized that the United States Government has no intention of entering into a Middle East arms race.
