The Cabinet yesterday approved a draft bill to be submitted to the Knesset, Israel’s Parliament, comprising new regulations governing the election of Israel’s President. Under the new bill, any Israeli citizen and resident over 40 years of age, would be eligible as a candidate for election to the Presidency by the Knesset provided his candidacy was endorsed by 20 members of the Knesset.

A proposal to limit the President’s tenure to two five-year terms was rejected by the Cabinet.
