Franz Schlegelberger, one-time acting Nazi Justice Minister who was accused of having participated in “the final solution of the Jewish problem,” today lost a court battle to retain a monthly pension as a retired government official. Schlegelberger, who has received the equivalent of $100,000 in retirement pay in the last decade, said he would appeal the court ruling.
The former Nazi Justice official, who was charged with having taken part in the Nazi euthanasia program and with responsibility for the disappearance of foreigners in Nazi concentration camps, had been sentenced to life imprisonment by an Allied War Crimes tribunal after the Second World War. He was pardoned a few years later and in 1951 began receiving a government pension.
