General Zvi Tzur, Israel’s Chief of Staff, said today that there was “great respect” for Israel’s army in the Far East. He thus summed up the findings of a lengthy tour of Burma, Thailand and Japan.
He reported to Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister, on his talks with Far Eastern statesmen and top military leaders and his conclusions. He told reporters that Israel had much to learn from various armies he inspected, particularly that of Japan, where there is “great stress” on the most modern application of electronics in various military spheres. He said Israel could also learn from Thailand and Burma military technology.
At the same time, he added, Israel could provide help to those countries from its experience with Nahal–the semi-military, semi-agricultural unit organization–and in its organization of military services.
