The Cabinet today reiterated its decision to accept the offer by the Rothschild Memorial Group to finance the establishment of an educational television network in Israel. At the same time, the Government issued a long-awaited ruling, prohibiting members of the coalition from voting against the project when it comes up again for debate in the Knesset, Israel’s Parliament. The House had postponed a decision on the measure several times during the past few weeks, while various coalition members had sought permission to vote against the bill.

The Cabinet allowed opponents of the measure from among the Coalition partners to abstain, provided opposition parties in the Knesset allow their members a free vote on the proposal. Under no circumstances, however, will the coalition members be allowed to vote against the bill. Cabinet members were told today that Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion had ended his opposition to the project, and had joined Education Minister Abba Eban in support of the proposal. The Knesset is scheduled to debate the issue this week.
