Twenty Two Jews Graduate As Officers in U.S. Military Academies

Twenty-two Jews received officers’ commissions at 1963 commencement exercises at four of the United States service academies today and three more will be commissioned on July 29.

Eleven Jewish ensigns were commissioned at the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. Five new Jewish second lieutenants received their commissions at West Point. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy commissioned two new Jewish ensigns at New London, Conn., and the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colo., commissioned four new second lieutenants. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Great Neck, N. Y., will graduate three new Jewish ensigns on July 29.

Each of the 22 new Jewish officers received personally inscribed copies of the Bible from the Commission on Jewish Chaplaincy Services of the Jewish Welfare Board. The presentations were made at Jewish baccalaureate services conducted by Jewish chaplains at the academies prior to commencement.
