Edmond Fleg, one of Europe’s leading writers, died here last night at the age of 89 after a lengthy illness. The funeral will be held Friday at the Jewish Cemetery in the center of Paris, Montparnasse and rites will be conducted by Rabbi A. Chili, the Chief Chaplain of the Jewish Boy Scouts of which Fleg had long been a patron.
Shortly before his death, the noted writer asked that no speeches be made at his funeral and that Jewish scouts be posted as honor guards at the rites.
Born in Geneva, Fleg made his literary career in France and became one of the country’s best known writers. He consistently made Jewish subjects the theme of much of his writing. He had been an officer of the Alliance Israelite Universelle and the Jewish-Christian Friendship Society. He was a member of the French Legion of Honor and a laureate of the French Academy.
