Defense Secretary McNamara today gave the Army-Air Force strike command all responsibility for handling brush-fire emergencies in the Middle East, Southern Asia and much of Africa.
The move was officially approved by President Kennedy. It will give the Army strike command under Gen. Paul Adams responsibility for “all U.S. defense activities in the Middle East, Southern Asia, including India and Pakistan, and Africa.”
The new command authority units previously divided responsibilities and assignments. Secretary McNamara’s move follows a study of the most effective preparations to deal with emergencies which may erupt in the Middle East or other affected regions.
