The Canadian Jewish Congress disclosed today that it had sent a commendation to Minister of Labor Leslie H. Rowntree on his administration of the Human Rights Code in Ontario which has come under criticism from the Association of Resort Owners.
The Jewish organization noted, in its communication, that the 1951 session of the Ontario Legislature approved a Fair Employment Practices law banning racial and religious discrimination in job placement. The act was cited as the initial step in a series of laws enacted throughout Canada “creating a legislative structure in our country that is the envy of many other lands.”
The Congress also commended the Minister for the steps taken in the past 18 months “to step up enforcement of the Human Rights code and to expand both its educational program and its administrative scope.” The Congress said the acceleration had helped “bring to the consciousness of our citizens that the government is as serious in the enforcement of this law as in all other legislation which it administers and that its intentions are not merely to confine its activities to lip-service.”
