Rabbi Unterman Agrees to Run for Office of Chief Rabbi in Israel

Rabbi Isser Unterman, of this city, agreed today to run for the office of Chief Rabbi of Israel for the Ashkenazi community, it was announced here today. Another candidate for that post in the elections scheduled to be held March 17 will be Rabbi Shlomo Goren, chief chaplain of Israel’s armed forces.

Israel has had no chief Ashkenazi rabbi since the death of the late Rabbi Isaac Halevi Herzog, who died in 1959. Rabbi Yitzhak Nissim is Chief Sephardic Rabbi. He is expected to be re-elected without opposition.
