Predictions of an American Jewish life threatened by “disappearance through intermarriage”were challenged last night as a “scare theory” by B’nai B’rith president Label A. Katz.
In a report to the organization’s administrative committee, Mr. Katz agreed that the increase in mixed marriages is a “growing problem that needs to be explored. ” But he disputed “the advertised fears of those who suggest the Jewish community could become an ultimate suicide because of it. ” He pointed out that during the same period in which, according to recent studies, the proportion of intermarriages has risen substantially, “there have also been noteworthy advances in almost every area of Jewish community life.”
