The Arab Technical Committee for Jordan Waters began another series of secret meetings in Beirut yesterday to continue discussion of a plan to divert Jordan River tributaries as a counter to Israel’s National Water Carrier plan, it was reported here today from the Arab capital.
The Arab plan is secret, but is known to fall into two stages, one immediate and the second long-term. The immediate stage involves diverting the headwaters at a cost of $20,000,000. Arab technicians hope to complete this stage within 18 months. The second stage involves building dams and canals and is expected to cost $215,000,000.
Meanwhile, it was reported here today from Cairo that Egyptian President Nasser and President Abdel Salam Arif of Iraq, who has been visiting Cairo, have agreed to the military unity of the United Arab Republic and Iraq. This was officially made known without further details, after a meeting of the two heads of state. A spokesman said there would be an “important announcement.”
