The Royal Canadian Legion urged Government action to combat distribution of hate literature through the mails. The 1,500 delegates at the Legion’s 20th national convention voted unanimous approval of a resolution asking the Government to apply “the full force of existing laws to prohibit the use of the mails” for such literature. It also asked that existing legislation be strengthened if it is insufficient to curb the practice.
The vote followed a talk by Municipal Affairs Minister Robert Smellie of Manitoba on the activities of the National White Americans Party. He told delegates the organization–a successor to the Nazi Party in Canada–distributed literature from a Scarboro, Ontario, address calling on Canadians to hate Jews. Mr. Smellie read a letter given wide circulation through the mail from Col. J.P. Fry, described as the Party’s national organizer. It called for the sterilization of Jews to prevent their growth.
