More than 150 invited guests attended the Inaugural Meeting of the Montreal Branch of the Canadian Jewish Historical Society held here at the Mr. Royal Hotel. The CJHS, which operates under the aegis of the Canadian Jewish Congress, will attempt to collect, preserve, publish and popularize material dealing with the settlement and history of Jews in Canada and will also play an active role in stimulating original research of Jewish history in Canada.
The opening program included the presentation of two major papers by Professor Michel Brunet, director of the Department of History, University of Montreal, and by Louis Rosenberg, research director, Canadian Jewish Congress. The program closed with the presentation of the H. M. Caiserman Award to Benjamin G. Sack by Lavy M. Becker, chairman of the publications committee of the Canadian Jewish Congress.
The H. M. Caiserman Award, established by the Canadian Jewish Congress in tribute to the late H. M. Caiserman, who was general secretary of the Congress for over 25 years, is presented annually for an outstanding contribution in the field of Jewish arts and letters in Canada. Mr. Sack was given the award in recognition of his contribution to Jewish culture as pioneer historian of Canadian Jewry.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
