A resolution released today by the National Community Relations Advisory Council “hailed the enactment by Congress of the strong Civil Rights bill” and expressed the belief that the bill’s strong bipartisan support reflects an emerging national consensus on the role of the Federal Government in civil rights.
The Council is a national coordinating body of six major national Jewish religious and civic organizations and 74 Jewish councils in cities throughout the United States. Its resolution called for prompt and full enforcement, and urged Congress to provide the appropriations required for implementation. The NCRAC warned that the “failure to move fast enough toward the conquest of discrimination gives rise to tactics of desperation.”
