A campaign undertaken here several years ago to cleanse the Great Brazilian Encyclopedia of previously used anti-Semitic definitions was seen here today as having succeeded. The new, 20th edition of the encyclopedia, issued today, has eliminated the former definitions of Jew as “swindler, ” rabbi as “devil,” and synagogue as “a place where people gather for illegal business.”

Fernandon Levisky a prominent attorney, had undertaken a drive several years ago to have such definitions deleted from the encyclopedia. Today, leaders of the Jewish community congratulated him on his success.
