The first day of Rosh Hashanah has been designated as a special day of prayer for Divine intercession on behalf of the Jews of the Soviet Union by the New York Board of Rabbis. In making this announcement today, Rabbi Max Schenk, president of the Board, also issued an appeal to the leaders of other religions “to raise their voices to protest the discrimination practiced against Jews and Judaism in the Soviet Union.”
Rabbi Harold Gordon, executive vice-president of the Board, said that this was the first time such an appeal on an organized level would be made on the High Holy Days. In the past, rabbis have made mention of Russia’s Jews in individual sermons or prayers.
