The Economic and Social Council, one of the major organs of the United Nations, has elected two Israelis to two important posts. ECOSOC has put one Israeli on the 21-member Human Rights Commission and made it possible for the other to continue holding the chairmanship of the United Nations Children Fund, it was announced here today.
Israel’s Supreme Court Justice Haim Cohn was chosen to membership on the Human Rights Commission, to replace a representative of the Turkish Government, whose term had expired. Justice Cohn had been a member of that Commission previously, from 1957 to 1959. At that time, he was Israel’s Attorney General.
Mrs. Zena Harman, wife of Avraham Harman, Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, was re-elected to the executive board of UNICEF. She is now chairman of that board but, since her term had expired, she had to face re-election by ECOSOC before she could continue holding the top UNICEF post.
