President Heinrich Luebke today signed into law an amendment to the Federal Restitution Law adopted last June by the West German Parliament, which extends restitution payments to many of those residents of Soviet bloc countries who failed to file applications by the October 1, 1953 cut-off date. A total of 800,000,000 Deutschemarks ($200,000,000) are involved in the restitution payments extension.

The four-month delay in promulgating the amendment bad been protested last week by Heinrich Van Dam, secretary-general of the Central Council of Jews in Germany. The amended law is expected to come into force when it is published in the next issue of the Official Gazette.
