T. Palmer Howard, Solicitor of the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal, indicated that he “was prepared to submit a proposal to the Canadian Jewish Congress that would legally permit the meeting of Jewish representatives on the education body” and that he felt that “his proposed solution would satisfy Jewish demands while maintaining rights granted the Protestant minority.”
Dr. Samuel Lewin of Congress in a newspaper interview stated that he “holds firmly to the opinion that the Jewish day elementary schools also have a strong claim for support by the Protestant School Board. He points out that “since one out of every four Jewish children of elementary school age attends a Jewish day school, the Protestant School Board is relieved of a substantial cost.”
In addition to Jewish representation on the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal discussions were held recently with the Board with regard to the implications of the changes in school taxation structure proposed by the Catholic School Commission and embodied in a bill before the Legislative assembly of Quebec.
