Fifth Jewish Deputy Wins Seat in Canadian Parliament in By-election

S. Max Saltsman, 43, won a surprise victory for the New Democratic Party in the Federal by-election in Waterloo-South. He will be the fifth Jewish member in the present Canadian Parliament.

The district, normally Conservative for the past 50 years, has a very small Jewish population. The City of Galt, with adjoining Hespeler and Preston, have 30 Jewish families. Mr. Saltsman is a past United Jewish Appeal chairman for the Galt Jewish community, which is about 80 miles northeast of Toronto.
