Israel’s Parliament adopted today a series of motions calling for greater educational, economic and social equality and more representation from Israel’s Oriental communities on Israel’s official and institutional bodies.
The Kuesset took the actions at the close of debate on integration problems during which Premier Levi Eshkol reviewed Government activities aimed at reducing the gap between ethnic groups in Israel. He reported that 15 percent of students currently in institutions of higher learning in Israel were from Sephardic families while five years ago, the proportion was five percent.
He called misleading figures in a report that 20 percent of immigrants from Britain last year returned to England because of absorption difficulties. He said most of the individuals involved had come not as immigrants but as tourists or temporary residents. He added that half of them had decided to remain in Israel. He also reported that most preparations for absorption of newcomers from the west had been completed.
