Two bequests totaling $475,000 were presented today to Hunter and City Colleges in New York from the estate of the late Max Richter, a Jewish industrialist who died in 1945, to provide grants and loans for deserving students. The gifts, $237,500 each, will be administered through a Max and Reba Richter Fund at each college. Buell G. Gallagher, president of City College, said that the fund “will provide many gifted students with an opportunity to stay in school in spite of financial need.”
Mr. Richter was born in Germany in 1859 and came to the United States at the age of 10. In 1889 he attended classes at City College for three days but had to leave for financial reasons and could not afford to continue. He later became a manufacturer of hosiery and motion picture theater owner. The gifts were transmitted to the colleges by Charles Segal, the executor of Mr. Richter’s estate. Mr. Segal is a member of the class of 1919 at City College.
