Msgr. Joseph Sullivan, chancellor of the Kansas City-St. Joseph diocese, preached a guest sermon Friday night at Temple B’nai Jehudah, the first Catholic clergyman to preach to the Jewish congregation.
Officials of the synagogue said that a sermon by a Christian clergyman is a longstanding tradition for Brotherhood Week services at the synagogue but until now the guest pastor has always been a Protestant.
A related event took place today when Msgr. Richard J. Schumacher, vicar general of the diocese and pastor of St. Elizabeth’s church, and 300 of his parishoners visited the synagogue for a dinner meeting to be followed by a roundtable discussion. Rabbi William B. Silverman and Msgr. Schumacher were among the panelists for the roundtable.
