Two New York Hebrew School Students Win Bible Quiz in Jerusalem

Two Hebrew day school students, both daughters of rabbis, placed third and fourth in the Second World Jewish Youth Bible Quiz. Balfour and Herzl Hakkak. Jerusalem twins, placed first and second.

The American winners were Esther Freilich and Deborah Heisler, both students at the Hebrew Institute of Far Rockaway, New York. Moshe Kohn of London shared fifth place with Hagi Benartzi of Israel. Other contestants who made high scores were David Cohen of London, Juditch Appleton of the United States, Shmuel Kirshner of Canada and David Bankir of Argentina.

The top three winners each received a deluxe edition of the Bible and 1,000 pound ($333) scholar-ships. Moshe Kohn, KagiBenartzi and Juditch Appleton also were awarded 1,000 pound scholarships. The scholarships were provided by the Premier’s office, the Foreign, Defense and Education Ministries and the Jerusalem Municipality. Deputy Premier Abba Eban was chairman of the Judges’ panel and former Premier David Ben-Gurion was chairman of the quiz presidium.
