Rockwell Booed at Flint College; Refused Room to Address Students

Download PDF for this date

American Nazi Party leader George Rockwell, invited to speak at Flint Junior College by a student but denied a forum by the college administration, was booed and Jeered by students on a self-guided tour of the campus. A few of the hostile students suggested a political office for the Nazi, shouting “Rockwell for dog catcher.” Other students greeted him with a chant of the civil rights song, “We Shall Overcome.”

The school officials refused to give him a room. The Methodist Valley Foundation of Flint rejected his request for a room and even use of its lawn. Reporters, police and detectives were out in force to greet Rockwell at the airport but no students came. He delivered him self of a few anti-Jewish remarks to a reporter, his lone hearer on his visit.
