The American Trade Union Conference for Histadrut concluded today its third annual meeting attended by some 250 leaders representing American labor groups. During the three days of deliberations, the speakers emphasized the various aspects of social and educational achievements in Israel which could serve as examples to American labor.
James Farmer, national director of the Congress of Racial, Quality, urged the establishment of industrial as well as agricultural cooperatives in the southern states, modeled after Histadrut enterprises. Ben Zion Ilan, special emissary of Histadrut, said that the cardinal task of Histadrut during the coming decade is to “translate the membership of the new immigrants into social and cultural terms and to infuse the principles of pioneering into the younger generation.”
Other speakers included Dr. Sol Stein, executive director of the National Committee for Labor Israel, and Gregory J. Bardacke, director of the American Trade Union Council for Histadrut, who stressed that American labor was not only impressed by Histadrut’s achievements but that they were eager to learn new ideas that would enrich the quality of American trade unionism.
