The 40th anniversary convention of Pioneer Women, the women’s labor Zionist organization, opened here tonight, with over 800 delegates representing 50,000 members in the United States and Canada in attendance. The convention will last four days.

Tonight’s opening session was addressed by Beba Idelson, deputy speaker of the Knesset, Israel’s Parliament, and head of Moetzet Hapoalot, the Pioneer Women’s sister organization in Israel. Other speakers included Harris Wossord, associate director of the United States Peace Corps, who praised Pioneer Women’s work in behalf of Israel’s women and new immigrants. Rachel Ben-Zvi, former first lady of Israel, who was to attend the convention but could not make the trip because of illness, sent a special message.
