The first grant in Hadassah’s five-year research and publications program has been made in honor of Professor Alexander M. Dushkin, noted Israeli and American educator, on the occasion of his 75th birthday anniversary, it was announced here today by Mrs. Mortimer Jacobson, national president of Hadassah.
The $6,500 grant will be known as “The Alexander M. Dushkin Fellowship.” It was awarded to Dr. Sidney Goldstein, chairman of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Brown University, for a study of Jewish demography in the United States, which will indicate generational differences in the American Jewish Community. The Hadassah program is being carried out in cooperation with the National Foundation for Jewish Culture to help strengthen Jewish identity among American Jews.
Further tribute to Professor Dushkin, who heads the Division of Jewish Education in the Diaspora at the Institute of Contemporary Jewry in Jerusalem, will be paid him at the luncheon session of Hadassah’s national convention this month at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Professor Dushkin was a founder of the Jewish Education Committee of New York and from 1923-34 was executive superintendent of the Chicago Board of Jewish Education. He settled in Israel permanently in 1949 to become Professor of Educational Administration at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
