A campaign to raise $1,000,000 in the United States as a permanent endowment fund to provide scholarships for students from Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland, in appreciation of the efforts of those countries in saving Jews from Nazi annihilation, was announced here today.
The announcement was made by Richard Netter, New York lawyer and president of “Thanks to Scandinavia,” a New York organization, who said that the organization already has about $150,000, plus substantial pledges. Victor Borge, the Danish Jewish comedian, is national chairman of the fund-raising campaign, Mr. Netter announced.
Each scholarship will amount to about $1,500 a year, supplemented in some cases by board and lodging provided by Phi Sigma Delta, a national college fraternity in the United States.
Among United States groups and agencies endorsing the project, Mr. Netter said, are the Department of State, the American Embassies in the Scandinavian countries, the American Jewish Committee, the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and many individual Jewish congregations. Representatives of the Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish Governments also hailed the project.
