David Kurtzmann, a leading educational research executive, has taken office as acting chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh, with the twin goals of maintaining the university’s high academic standards, while developing stronger financial support for the school.
Born in Odessa, and brought here when he was 17, Mr. Kurtzmann had been senior research and education associate at the Fels Institute of the University of Pennsylvania since 1963, and had held faculty posts at Temple University and other schools. He has also served as Pennsylvania State Secretary of Administration.
Active in the Jewish community, he is a former president of the Jewish Family and Children’s Service, an ex-officio member of the United Jewish Federation Board, and surveyed the United Vocational Service.
