Ten honorary degrees were awarded to Jewish scholars and spiritual leaders, and 97 students were graduated, as the Jewish Theological Seminary of America held its commencement exercises here yesterday. Among the graduates were eight citizens of Israel, who received various degrees in course.
The honorary degrees were awarded to Dr. Eli Ginzberg, professor of economics at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business; Dr. Oscar Janowksy, professor of history at the City College of New York; Dr. Meyer Schapiro, famous art expert who is University Professor at Columbia; Rabbi Harold H. Gordon, executive vice-president of the New York Board of Rabbis; Rabbi Judah Nadich, spiritual leader of the Park Avenue Synagogue.
Also to Rabbi Max J. Routtenberg, spiritual leader of Temple Bnai Sholom, Rockville Centre, L. I.; Rabbi Morris B. Chapman, of Congregation B’nai Israel, St. Petersburg, Fla.; Rabbi Armond E. Cohen, Park Synagogue, Cleveland; Rabbi Reuben J. Magil, Temple Bet Zion-Beth Israel, Philadelphia; and, posthumously, the late Rabbi Joseph Warren, of Temple Beth El, Lowell, Mass. The degree to the late Dr. Warren was accepted by his daughter, Mrs. Martin Sokol, of Great Neck, N.Y.
