The Habimah Theater management indicated today it was willing to cancel the two-year suspension imposed on two of its veteran actors for appearing in productions of other theaters if they would agree to quit those roles and to accept Habimah assignments.
The actors are Shmuel Rudensky, who is currently playing Tevya in the Israeli version of “Fiddler on the Roof, ” and Shlomo Bar Shavit, who is playing in “The Strange Case of Aliza Mizrachi. ” The management had justified the unprecedented suspensions on grounds that if it did not act, “every Habimah actor will decide he can pick and choose the plays in which he will agree to perform.”
However, Mr. Rudensky signed a six-month contract yesterday to continue playing the role of Tevya. He had previously responded to the suspension with a complaint that Habimah had paid him “starvation wages” during his 20 years with the troupe.
