The American Jewish Committee has affiliated itself with a seven-year project to be launched next fall for the study of factors that led some groups of people to select other groups for prosecution and destruction, it was announced here yesterday. The announcement was made by Lord Butler, former British Foreign Secretary, who is chairman of the Columbus Trust, a group formed especially to direct the study. Morris B. Abram, president of the American Jewish Committee, has been added to the membership of the Trust, Lord Butler said.
The study, expected to cost about $700,000, will be launched under the auspices of the University of Sussex. The American Jewish Committee will assist in the financing of the project and will also cooperate in the planning and implementation of the study, according to Lord Butler. One of the main aims of the study, Lord Butler said, will be to examine the Nazi program for the extermination of Jews, Slavs and other peoples, paying particular attention to efforts to discover the motivations of those who planned and executed the annihilation program without a feeling of guilt.
