Sir Barnett Janner, chairman of the foreign affairs committee of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, reported at the Board meeting here yesterday that discussions have been held with the British High Commissioner of Aden regarding the future position of the Jews in Aden, and their property, following Britain’s scheduled withdrawal from that protectorate in 1968. There are about 500 Jews in Aden, out of a total population of 660,000.
In his monthly report on foreign affairs, Sir Barnett urged continued protests against the situation of Russian Jewry. He said that American circles have denied that the USSR has put into operation many of the promises made by Moscow authorities to alleviate the conditions of oppression practiced against Russian Jewry in the religious and cultural fields.
On an important domestic issue, the Board’s president, Solomon Teff, urged the organization’s executive committee to offer its services to help solve the dispute between the United Synagogue and the Federation of Synagogues. The conflict between the two religious bodies, he said, is “making increasing inroads into the unity of British Jewry.”
