The University of Texas has approved a program granting a B.A. degree with Hebrew as a major study, according to an announcement today by Chancellor Harry Ransom.
Chancellor Ransom said that the revival of Hebrew as a living language has stimulated the rapid progress of teaching, research and library development in Hebrew studies at the University. He emphasized that the U. of Texas program is “an essential continuation” of the tradition established by Rabbi Henry I. Cohen of Galveston. Citing the growing popularity of the program, Chancellor Ransom said that registration in Hebrew courses at the university had grown from 12 in 1963 to 100 in 1965.
