The executive committee of the International PEN (Poets, Essayists and Novelists),meeting at Arnhem, approved a resolution urging Soviet writers and publishers to restore the prerogatives of Yiddish literature “to a status equal to all others” in the Soviet Union. The resolution said that PEN recognized “various improvements in the situation of Yiddish literature in the Soviet Union,” but that further improvement was needed.
Boards of various Dutch Jewish communities sent telegrams yesterday to Premier Joseph Cals and Foreign Minister Joseph Luns, asking support at the United Nations for any steps there which might lead to religious and cultural rights for Soviet Jewry.
The telegrams referred to a discussion on the problem in the Dutch Parliament last December and the positive attitude by the Foreign Minister in that debate. They asked that this viewpoint be brought up at the current session of the U.N. General Assembly.
