Israel made formal application here today to the European Economic Community, seeking associate membership in the six-nation European Common Market. Israel’s present limited trade agreement with the Euromart expires next June 1.
Amiel Najar, Israel’s Ambassador to the EEC, notified the EEC Council of Ministers and the EEC executive commission of Israel’s desire to start negotiations immediately for associate status, to replace the present agreement. That agreement was achieved after months of negotiation, and fell far short of Israel’s hopes for a pact which would protect its booming exports against rising EEC tariff barriers. The six countries that are members of the EEC are France, Italy, West Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.
